With the Guinness Book of record’s 65th birthday coming up on the 27th August and our lust for unusual places to visit, we thought we would give a list of 15 places or events that are the worlds biggest or longest or smallest something! You get the idea! If theres something we have missed or any tips on how to get there.. let us know! And to start us off…
The worlds oldest continuously inhabited city;Embed from Getty Images
Damascus, Syria claims the title for the worlds oldest continuously inhabited city with records showing the city has been inhabited for at least 11,000 years with records as far back as 10,000 BC. Since 2018, Syria has been safe to travel too and has hosted over 1.8million tourists each year since. Although there is a lot of media attention on the country, tourist areas are safe and hold an abundance of culture and history. There are hoops to jump through to get into the country (Such as getting security clearance and a visa IN ADVANCE) but they are well worth it as if these are not followed, you will be rewarded with a 5-10 year prison stay. But it will be well worth the visit, with the abundance of culture in Damascus and the friendliness of the locals (Plus money stretches along way), Damascus, the oldest inhabited city on the planet is well worth a visit and can be accessed via flights from certain countries or get in touch with a tour operator such as Soviet Tours.

The Burj Khalifa – 830 metres tall, is the tallest building in the world and is currently unrivaled in height! You will find this landmark in Dubai, UAE and is a popular tourist attraction for all with its viewpoint over this great city. The worlds longest bridge;
The worlds longest bridge spans from Shanghai to Nanjing in China and is 169KM long. As part of the Beijing-Shanghai highspeed railway, this bridge is used by trains to travel the country at great speeds. Although this is not a place in itself we can recommend, the cities either side are definitely worth a visit. Shanghai with its futuristic skyline and its abundance of things to see and do and Nanjing, on the Yangtze river, is full of ancient history and tourist attractions such as the human historical landscapes, mountains and waters such as Fuzimiao, Ming Palace, Chaotian Palace, Porcelain Tower, Drum Tower, Stone City, City Wall, Qinhuai River, Xuanwu Lake and Purple Mountain and is very popular among local and foreign tourists.

Adamstown, with a population of 67, located on the Pitcairn Islands holds the crown for the worlds least populated city and is the only settlement on the islands. This tropical paradise is not the easiest to get to, but you can! When you are there.. it is every bit as postcard like as the photos. To get there, fly to Totegegie Airport from Tahiti then catch a boat ride to Pitcairn Island, 32 hours later, Voila! Your here! Treat the journey as part of the travel experience and see some of the most awesome places on earth. Little fact.. Like it that much? You can live there for free! All you need to do is to register for the land and build a house!

Mount Everest, Nepal is the worlds tallest mountain and as much a challenge to many people as it is a natural landmark. Standing at 8848 Metres tall, it is by far the tallest anything on earth. Bet there some great views up there though.. give it a go? I hear Nepal giving permits away to anyone these days! Not a fan of climbing, visit Kathmandu and be a tourist in the countries capital, see its cultural history and grand temples, try some fantastic Nepalese food and have that great city experience in a once in a lifetime destination!

With a land mass of over 6.6 Million Square Miles and spanning across 9 different time zones, Russia is largest country in the world and is bigger than some continents! Virtually impossible to drive across and see it all (We wouldn’t recommend it!) the trans-Siberian railway is the best way to see as much of the country as possible. With tickets from approximately $1000 and a trip that lasts minimum 8 days, stop off at different parts of Russia and enjoy the journey while sleeping on board! The train runs from Moscow to Vladivostok. Kick back and enjoy!

Tokyo, Japan is the worlds most populated city with a tremendous 38,140,000 people. The capital of Japan is one of the most technologically advanced countries in the world and is famous for its sky towers, anime, electronics, sushi and ancient temples. With over 15 million tourists each year, i think that figure alone says that it is a worthy destination to visit.

Bloukrans Bridge in Western Cape, South Africa is the place where the worlds highest bungee jump takes place and if you look very carefully (You may have to zoom in!), bungee jumps take place right in the middle of the bridge just underneath the road. At 216 Metres high, are you feeling brave enough to conquer this record holder?

Our second visit to Russia on this list takes us to Oymyakon, in the Sakha Republic in eastern Russia. Oymyakon regularly reaches average temperatures of -48.8°C in the winter and has recorded the lowest ever temperature in the northern hemisphere of -67.7°C. Getting here is not too difficult as you can hop on a flight from Moscow or take a tour with many tour operators. It is an eye-opener and a culturally fascinating place, more of a day trip or a visit while travelling Russia than a holiday destination though!

St. Peters Basilica is the worlds biggest church, situated in the Vatican City. The church, which was built in 1506, is a major tourist attraction and is a must see when visiting Rome. With that much to see and do in Rome and the Vatican City, you can make a pretty awesome weekend appreciating the ancient roman buildings, the architecture and eating some fantastic Italian food! Boasting an area size of 21,095 square feet, this deservedly holds the record for worlds biggest church.
The worlds biggest festival;
Donauinselfest, Vienna in Austria is the worlds largest festival welcoming over 3 million festival goers every year and has hosted some great names in the past years such as Sean Paul, Bob Geldof and many more. The festival is located on an island in Vienna and does not sell tickets, entry is free! Fancy a festival with an excellent atmosphere in a great city, We definitely recommend Donauinselfest.
The worlds most dangerous road;
This road, that links La Paz and the Yungas region in Bolivia has been known as ‘Death Road’ due to the amount of fatalities that have happened on this road over time. Now, it is more of a tourist attraction and used for excursions such as mountain biking. The road used to claim 200+ lives per year until a new safer road that links the two regions was built in 2006. Driving this road is still possible and can get busy times of the day as this part of the world lures in thousands of tourists each year. Either hire a car or mountain bike or book through a tour operator to see this road in full glory.
The worlds happiest city;
Helsinki, Finland is officially the worlds happiest city! This is, of course, based on opinion so not technically a record breaker but the people have spoken! Helsinki is a beautiful and fantastic city all year round. This coastal city really does have it all. From great tourist attractions, ferry trips to explore different islands and saunas for the winter (to get away from all the snow!) You can get there from pretty much anywhere as it boasts an international airport (check out flights via ixploring.com) and the people are super-friendly! You can see why its the happiest place on earth.

Located in Washington DC., the library of Congress is the largest library in the world and boasts a collection of over 170 million items from books, recordings, manuscripts and more. Entry to the library is free and it hosts many exhibitions throughout the year. This is a fantastic place to visit and definitely worth seeing while in Washington DC. Start your trip off here then head on to other sights in the area such as the Washington Monument, the White House, the Smithsonian museum the Capitol building and much more. The worlds biggest xmas market is a must visit with over 150 stalls and brings in over 3 million people a year. Christmas world at the city hall in Vienna, Austria starts in mid-November and finishes this year on December 23rd. With stalls selling pretty much anything Christmas from gifts to food and drink, you are guaranteed to get into the festive visit after visiting Vienna and if we had to recommend one Christmas market to visit, we would pick Vienna Christmas World.
